Breaking Normal

Breaking Normal written freshman spring 2015 inspired by this awesome video from Ze Frank I just returned from a 7.013 Introductory Biology  midterm, and the greatest pleasure in the world is ripping my glasses off, dragging pajamas on in a hurry before jumping into the softest bed for a nap. The rest of the day promises no surprises. I’ll need to find food, wash off long hours of studying, check in with friends and fellow midterm takers, and, mostly (or so I hope), study for the next exam. It’s all kind of… ordinary. MIT is pretty great, don’t get me wrong. But now, when I walk across the East Campus courtyard, twisting my neck to see the Boston skyline, the trip feels routine, normal. I can walk out in my slippers and pajama pants or clothing that totally doesn’t match. Sometimes I carry a hamper of laundry. The thought of transporting a bag of dirty clothing directly across from the Boston skyline and along MIT campus would’ve terrified me earlier. But East Campus is home now, and any person should have the right to carry a laundry hamper across their own yard. When I walk through Lobby 10 (that’s under the Great Dome), the momentary gaze at the river is almost automatic. It’s a daily checkup. Maneuvering the crowds in the Infinite Corridor has become easy. I guess I’m used to being here, used to completing psets by Friday morning and then simply sitting on the couches in the lounge Friday evening. I’m used to the cycle of work and then more work and then chilling with friends and doing household chores. I find comfort in the ordinary and routine: the sitting, the nightly runs to Seven Eleven, the frequent walks to the Charles River or to a friend’s door, the room cleaning, the napping…. I could take it all for granted. But thats not what this post is about. This is an attempt to find the magical in the mundane, to see the extraordinary in the habitual. Here goes. **** On one side of MIT lies Boston, a place of opportunity and beautifully dressed people. Cambridge opposes the big city skyline with rows of small houses and shops with tiny wonders, like vinyl records of Soviet metal bands and extreme patent leather boots. Beyond that is the mystical place known as Harvard, one that I once had trouble believing existed. Then again, I was shocked when I saw the real life MIT Dome as well. Just hours ago, I witnessed the sunrise. The Charles River was still, perfectly reflective. It seemed that the Boston skyline, the boats, and the buoys were all balancing on a mirror. A breeze blew tiny ripples along the middle of the waterway, driving a small MIT boat forward. A pink-orange glow spread over the surfaces of glass-covered towers across the river. MIT looked so peaceful! In the Infinite Corridor, endless passages still wind together and separate and lead to hidden treasures and displays: a lab with a transparent glass front, a model of a ship, or a random Christmas tree that should’ve been watered. If I looked closely, perhaps I could try to pinpoint the lines where one building in the Infinite flows into another, or try to figure out the order in the Infinite’s numbering chaos (and maybe even find all the rare women’s restrooms). In the East Campus courtyard, I can feel summer. The magnolias have bloomed. They smell sweet, and the sun is warm. Further down, students are playing tennis.  The courtyard is now full of life. The sun reflects off the silver spray paint on a wooden sign in the middle of the courtyard, illuminating the words “Welcome to EC.” It’s CPW 2015, and it feels just like last year, when, as a prefrosh, I wandered awkwardly into the yard, cautious and then excited. Today, on the Biology exam, I had to answer questions about our body’s immune response. When I got sick last week, I could understand my blood test results! I could almost feel the lymphocytes fighting hard inside my lymph nodes, defeating the sickness that got past all the other immune system barriers. Once I’m better, my immune system will remember the fight, and I will hopefully not be sick like this again. I have 10 billion B cells to help with that. I shudder at the complexity within all of us. There is so much going on, right now, in my body: the battle for better health, the production of new cells It’s not so ordinary. Well, maybe it is, but learning about it, hearing about the most recent research conducted right here, a minute away from home, that is not so ordinary. That is pretty spectacular. Flyers of all sizes and colors in the Infinite announce events in the MIT Community. There’s an improv comedy show this Friday by the student group Roadkill Buffet, and a Piano Drop from the roof of Baker House on Drop Date. Noam Chomsky is coming to speak again. And there’s more, so much more, so many things to see and hear and participate in. After my nap, I will head over to the west parallel of East Campus, where I’ll get to talk to EC alumni and eat free pad thai. And afterwards I may be tempted to position myself in the lounge for a while, to talk about silly things and maybe also learn about the latest solar car developments or see a musical Tesla coil. Though, really, I should study for my 18.03 Differential Equations  midterm. I’m almost excited for it. ODEs and Fourier Series, and all those things you can do with matrices and systems, are a lot to handle, but kind of cool. I’ll forget 18.03 content soon, I think, but I’m happy to learn it today. More thoughts on academics: MIT is flexible. That’s pretty cool. Last week, I decided to pursue a non-existent major, Education. Well, technically it’s Urban Studies and Planning (Course 11), but the major requirements are flexible enough that I can tailor them to my needs. I might also get a minor in Comparative Media Studies (CMS) and explore educational games, film, and other types of media. I used to dream about being a Film major, and was convinced MIT would prevent that, but now everything has sort of resolved itself, and my CourseRoad looks extremely exciting. Putting everything in order, weeding out the unnecessary and supplementing it with the fascinating was a challenge. I want to learn it all. I hate that I have to wait for years to take some of the classes. So I have to keep moving and working more, and I guess that means I won’t settle down. Over the summer, my friends will got on boats off the coast of Alaska, work at JPL, CERN, Red Hat, and NIH. Some will stay on campus, where I also will have the most exciting job ever (more on that later). Last summer, I couldn’t get hired at McDonald’s, Subway, Panera Bread, and Old Navy. This year, I cannot wait for employment! Earlier, I met with a visiting protofrosh and, through her eyes, I saw the random beauty of the Infinite Corridor anew. “Everything at MIT seems like a puzzle. That’s what I love about it,” she said. I haven’t solved the puzzle yet. So I’ll stay and explore more, in brief deviations from the “routine.” I’ve never been bored here, not yet. I wanted to stay on campus for the summer. It seemed odd to leave the place that makes me so comfortable, content, and excited, while also challenging me to learn. MIT is the place that allows me to experiment and explore, but always return to the comfortable routines. Some things at MIT remain the same and cycle through. But sometimes, I can break the normal. Look around. Things are pretty great. Remember that.

While eighty-five percent of the teenage girls who become pregnant every year do not plan their pregnancies, an alarming fifteen percent of these pregnancies are in fact intentional (Bell 107). Some girls are under the false pretenses that having a baby will provide them with a certain amount of love that is currently missing in their lives. Many also believe that with this new life they have helped create will come a renewed sense of hope (107). These incentives reflect emotional problems that will not be solved by becoming pregnant, but will only get worse. Some of the more common ones are that most pregnant teens are bad girls, and that many teens who have children together wind up getting married to one another. The reality is that teen and adolescent pregnancy is an issue that concerns and involves all types of girls from all races and incomes (Preventing 3). Regarding the marriage of teen parents, only ten percent of teen parents marry, and the majority of the time the marriages do not work out. Before the problem of teen pregnancy is attacked, it is important for both teens and adults to have a better understanding of exactly what the issues are, and to acknowledge the extreme differences between the lies and the facts. A common misconception about the prevention of teen pregnancy is that the increase of contraception availability will result in an increase of pregnancies. Forty-five percent of people interviewed said that they believed that if schools were to begin dispensing birth control products, it would make teenagers more likely to engage in sexual activities (Newsweek 56). This ties in very closely with the ever-growing debate of legal abortions. Many believe that when abortions are legalized people (particularly teenagers,) will begin taking advantage of the increased availability of abortions, and begin using them as a form of birth control. Physics Fields and Disciplines of Study Physics is the branch of science which is concerned with the nature and properties of non-living matter and energy that are not dealt with by chemistry or biology, and the fundamental laws of the material universe.  As such, it is a huge and diverse area of study. In order to make sense of it, scientists have focused their attention on one or two smaller areas of the discipline. This allows them to become experts in that narrow field, without getting bogged down in the sheer volume of knowledge that exists regarding the natural world. The Fields of Physics Physics is sometimes broken into two broad categories, based on the history of the science: Classical Physics, which includes studies that arose from the Renaissance to the beginning of the 20th century; and Modern Physics, which includes those studies which have been begun since that period. Part of the division might be considered scale: modern physics focuses on tinier particles, more precise measurements, and broader laws that affect how we continue to study and understand the way the world works. Another way to divide physics is applied or experimental physics (basically, the practical uses of materials) versus theoretical physics (the building of overarching laws as to how the universe works). As you read through the different forms of physics, it should become obvious that there is some overlap. For example, the difference between astronomy, astrophysics, and cosmology can be virtually meaningless at times. To everyone, that is, except the astronomers, astrophysicists, and cosmologists, who can take the distinctions very seriously. Classical Physics Before the turn of the 19th century, physics concentrated on the study of mechanics, light, sound and wave motion, heat and thermodynamics, and electromagnetism. Classical physics fields that were studied before 1900 (and continue to develop and be taught today) include: Acoustics: The study of sound and sound waves. In this field, you study mechanical waves in gases, liquids, and solids. Acoustics includes applications for seismic waves, shock and vibration, noise, music, communication, hearing, underwater sound, and atmospheric sound. In this way, it encompasses earth sciences, life sciences, engineering, and the arts.Astronomy: The study of space, including the planets, stars, galaxies, deep space, and the universe. Astronomy is one of the oldest sciences, using mathematics, physics, and chemistry to understand everything outside of the Earths atmosphere.Chemical Physics: The study of physics in chemical systems. Chemical physics focuses on using physics to understand complex phenomena at a variety of scales from the molecule to a biological system. Some of the fields in modern physics are: Astrophysics: The study of the physical properties of objects in space. Today, astrophysics is often used interchangeably with astronomy and many astronomers have physics degrees.Atomic Physics: The study of atoms, specifically the electron properties of the atom, as distinct from nuclear physics which considers the nucleus alone. In practice, research groups usually study atomic, molecular, and optical physics.Biophysics: The study of physics in living systems  at all levels, from individual cells and microbes to animals, plants, and entire ecosystems. Steven Shamlian, Anubhav Kaul Benjamin Harrison was the 23rd president of the United States, from 1889-1893. He was 56 when he was elected president. Benjamin Harrison was born to a Presbyterian family on Aug. 20, 1833, on his grandfather's farm in North Bend, Ohio. He was named for his great-grandfather, a signer of the Declaration of Independence. His grandfather was William Henry Harrison, the 9th president. Ben was the second of the 10 children of John Scott Harrison and Elizabeth Irwin Harrison. Harrison attended Farmers' College in a Cincinnati suburb for three years. While a freshman, he met his future wife, Caroline Lavinia Scott. Harrison and "Carrie" Scott were married in 1853. They had two children, Russell Benjamin and Mary. One year before their marriage, he graduated with distinction from Miami University in Oxford, Ohio. In 1854, Harrison passed the bar exam and moved to Indianapolis. In Indianapolis, he practiced law and campaigned for the Republican Party. In 1860, he was elected report er of the Indiana Supreme Court. A deeply religious man, Harrison taught Sunday school. He became a deacon of the Presbyterian Church in 1857, and was elected the elder of the church in 1861. In 1862, Governor Olive P. Morton asked Harrison to recruit and command the 70th Regiment of Indiana Volunteers in the Civil War. Harrison accepted the challenge. He was a fearless commander and rose to the rank of brigadier General â€Å"foe ability and manifest energy and gallantry in command of brigade.† After the war, Harrison won national prestige as a lawyer. President Hayes appointed him to the Mississippi River Commission in 1879, and he held this post until 1881. Harrison turned down a post in the cabinet of President Garfield because he was elected to the U.S. Senate in January 1881. During his tem in the Senate, Harrison upheld civil service reform, a protective tariff, a stronger navy, and regulation of railroads. He made speeches in favor for the restriction of Chinese immigration and against the importation of contract labor. He criticized President Cleveland’s vetoes of veterans’ pension bills. Harrison was looking forward to a second term in senat e, but was defeated by Indiana’s Democratic legislature by one vote. James G. Blaine, who had lost the 1884 election to Cleveland, refused to run in 1888. Many people in the world believe that the Muslim community worship a man by the name of Muhammad. Quran and Sunnah teach of a monotheistic Islam mode of worship and only a non-Muslim would argue that they do worship a prophet. They have raised Islam by use of creative arts and have even started a newspaper under their name. Many of them continue to be arrested, affected by diseases and poor educational levels. This shows how they have been neglected and seen as outsiders. India has experienced violence against the Muslims. This has been attributed to socio-political and historical reasons with the Hindus. This has been brought by competition in business where Muslims businesses are targeted plus they are seen as a political threat to the Hindus due to their increasing numbers (Dabashi 2012).) Pakistan’s population is made up of Muslims raging to 96 percent. There are Islamic schools that teach people on the modern education. Due to media influence, women have been forced to wear Hijabs. There has also reduction in the number of attacks due to the intervention of the government and agencies of intelligence.In the middle East part of the world, Muslim enjoys a huge following with Judaism and Christianity also having following but not as Islam. Sunni is the major part of the Muslim and Shi’a is the minority. Violence has always been there due to the two having conflicts on who is to lead the Muslims in general. Judaism in Middle East is commonly found in Israel while Christians migrated into the area long time ago. The number of Christians has been decreasing due to the persecution by the majority who are the Muslims.This is due to Jihad as anybody who does not believe in Allah deserves not to live. Relationship between Islam, Christianity and Judaism All the three religions have one God and are as a result of one father who is Abraham(Peters 2008). The source books are the Bible, Quran and Hebrew Tanakh. According to the Christians, Jesus Christ comes to reconcile people and forgive sins, in Islam was to spread the gospel while Judaism does not attach any relevant role of Christ. He is the second in the trinity born of a virgin in Christianity, a prophet sent by Allah for the Muslims and Judaism does not attach any relevant tittle but takes him as an ordinary Jew. In Christianity, sin is inherited from Adam, Muslims believe they were born without sin while Judaism does not show any knowledge of sin that is original. Interaction of Muslims and Non-Muslims Allah did not object to the idea of Muslims mixing with non-Muslims in the Quran. He, however,proposes that such a relationship should be to promote peace and order. For this reason, Muslims in the world mix freely with the non-believers. This is an exception of countries with different understanding of the non-Muslims who view them as not worth living for example in the Middle East. Islam teaches on peaceful coexistence and love to the mankind. This is the reason most of the Muslims in USA and Great Britain live in love with those who are not Muslims. They are taught not to take behaviors of the non-Muslims more so on the issue of dressing (Thomas et al 2009). Even when the enemies are against them, Islam teaches about finding amicable peaceful solutions and not war. Those who fight are not true Muslims, according to their belief and teachings. Muslim socializes with the non-Muslims to establish, compassion, justice and tolerance. They visit their sick, socialize during happy moment s, greetings in the form of handshake and hugging, sharing and giving them gifts. They also offer condolence messages when struck by a disaster. Conclusion Islam is a religion with a following in many countries in the world. Many of its believers are found in the Middle East part of the world. The religion has been full of misconceptions by the non-Muslims on their general beliefs and way of worship. Most of the people believe that women are not valued, that the Muslims do not recognize Jesus, Worship a person in the name of Muhammad and are mostly Arabs. These misconceptions are only to the people who do not know the teachings of the Quran. Islam is practiced by people of diverse cultures from USA to Great Britain, Pakistan and India. The teachings of Islam makes them relate well with the non-Muslims as it teaches on peaceful existence and love to the neighbors. Outline The research paper shows how Islam is a sensitive part of the general public in the country today. It has been associated with many misconceptions which are only false beliefs. The introduction in brief, explains the difference between Islam and Muslims and the different areas the paper will dwell on. The first part of the paper describes the main misconceptions that are there in the society. Many believe that Islam is a religion of the Arabs whereas the country with the highest number of Muslims is not Arabic speaking. There is also the misconception that Islam does not recognize Jesus and that it does not value women. It is also a misconception that Muslims worship a person. The second part shows the different areas and the reactions of Muslims towards the non-Muslims. These areas have different approach due to the diverse cultural beliefs in the areas. The third part describes the relationship among the three major religions which are Islam, Christianity and Judaism. This part shows a similarity among the three and some differences. This shows the different beliefs of the different groups in the different religions. This leads to the next part of the paper which is how the Muslims interact with the other groups which are not Muslims. This is based on the teachings of the Quran which insists on peace and love of the mankind. It also cautions on the influence of the non-Muslims to their beliefs and code of conduct. This new freedom was the right to vote. Suffrage along with the first World War opened the door for women who were previously considered to only be in the homes, to now begin occupying new jobs that were vacant due to men being at war (bbc bitesize). After gaining suffrage, women†¦show more content†¦In general, although these groups were divided in some smaller issues, they all garnered against the idea the â€Å"Cult of True Womanhood,† which was a belief that women should be subservient and only remain involved with the sphere of the household. (fight for suffrage history) Among the groups fighting for suffrage, two differing political groups emerged in 1914 due to the lack of unity and various ideas on how to approach the fight for suffrage. The first group was the more conservative National American Woman Suffrage Association lead by Carrie Chapman Catt, and the second was the Congressional Union lead by Alice Paul. The Congressional Union, comprised of mostly young women, was more radical and participated in efforts such as picketing the White House; whereas the National American Woman Suffrage Association focused mostly on garnering support on a state-by-state basis. Throughout all suffrage campaigns, one thing remained similar, for the most part, black women were not allowed to participate in suffrage because they were feared to lose support for the white woman’s political recognition in southern areas where the sense of â€Å"black disenfranchisement† would be disturbed. As the country entered into war, women’s suffrage campaigns were put on hold, nonetheless, their works during this period were the push that they needed to win support from some of those who doubted their cause.
